Bridge Inspired Earrings in Metal

Here’s an Update on the “Bridge/Sail” earrings in metal.

Originally made of recycled plastic, Brass was used to make the Sail Boat earrings in Metal. I chose brass because of the rich patina that can be achieved by heating with a torch.

The Process:

Making the plastic version was much easier: cut, fold and attach ear wires.

The Brass earrings took much more time to make:

Cut, Smooth, Polish, Flame-Paint, Seal, Fold, and Attach ear wires. Inside corners were a little tricky.

I flame-painted the brass but got only gray colors. It took a lot of work, and I was disappointed in the color. The second try was a little better with subtle pinks, purples and blues. The key is not to get the metal too hot.

Then the edges were sanded so that the golden color of the brass shines through. This emphasizes the shape and movement of each layer.

Finally, The metal is sealed with a coating of clear lacquer so that it won’t tarnish or lose its color.
