Hope for Change
Imagine that there is something about you that makes others hate you enough to kill you, and it is something you can’t change. Imagine the hopelessness, sadness and anger you would have, no matter how nice you are, how smart, how strong, how beautiful. I happened to see a video of a black mother explaining this to her child. The happy innocent little girl was in the middle of her reply, when the reality of her mother’s words became clear, and she began to cry.
As an artist, I let my art speak for me. The sunburst pattern has been a symbol of hope in my jewelry. I originally made a necklace about being quarantined, a house with the sun rising behind it. My newest design is for the Black Lives Matter movement. It depicts the tears of that little girl with the hope of a new day rising.
Note: This Necklace was part of an exhibition at GCAA Creative Zone.
