Tampa Bay Coral
A Local Favorite
After moving to Florida 18 years ago, I learned metal work and got involved with the Pinellas Geological Society. I had been a rock hound as a kid, and this rekindled that love of finding treasures in the wild. I had never heard of Tampa Bay Coral before, and was intrigued.
Tampa Bay Coral, also called Agatized Coral is fossilized coral which has turned into colorful agate. It ranges in color from golden brown to black and often blue. Sometimes it has crystals inside. It is found in the rivers around Central Florida. Divers find it in their highly guarded secret spots. But you can also find it on the beach at Honeymoon Island.
I created the above pendant from a piece of Tampa Bay Coral and a Shark’s Tooth.
